1987 Head light buld replacement
Hello All,
I need to replace the head light bulb on 911 / 1987, I took out the buld and see it marked 9004, as I remember some one has told me this year need H4 head light, can some one confirm ?
Also I see a lot of bulb that sell on eBay for higher wattage out put:
Hiper Plazma Xenon 9004 Lights. Super Plazma 9004 twin pack 80w/85w = output 100w/130w, 4000K
Please comment
Thanks
TC

You have H5 lamps.
If you want to go to higher wattage bulbs, you should incorporate a relay into your lighting circuit. Otherwise, the additional electrical load required by the higher wattage bulbs has to travel through your high beam/turn signal assembly, which isn't equipped to handle it, which greatly shortens it's life. Relays are cheap, around $10 each.
On the PIAA bulbs, scan the forums. In general, the consensus seems to be there's no such thing as a free lunch, and a stock 65/45w bulb isn't going to give you 110/85w. Some have suggested it's voodoo measurements, and some that have installed them have been disappointed. But scan the archives and decide for yourself.
If it were me, and I wanted more light, I would get some 55/100w bulbs and install a relay. That gives regular light on low beams and much brighter high beams. Another option would be to install H4's (around $225/pair), which have a much crisper lighting pattern than H5's, and you can still opt for a higher wattage H4 bulb if you choose. Did I say use a relay with a higher wattage bulbs?

TC,
(1) If you have stock US '87 lights, you most likely have H5's, not H4's.
(2)You can run higher wattage bulbs, but given that the current all runs through the weak switch, I would think that adding relays would be advisable if you plan to go that route.
(3) I can't comment on the "X-treme Plazma" bulbs, but just that name alone would make me take a pass.
Others may disagree, but I don't think any of the "super white" bulbs do much to actually improve useful light output (and in some cases may actally decrease it) other than changing the color spectrum. The H5's are crappy enough on their own without adding the questionable "improvement" of some of the aftermarket bulbs, in my opinion.
Good luck,
Tim

TC,
The 9004 bulb is the H5 bulb, shown below:

You can search the archives here for several different options for wiring relays, or also take a look at <a href="http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.asp?id={B1B6B15B-BF55-4CB9-B785-6230759B40B7}" target="_blank">this</a>, which may also be helpful.
Good luck,
Tim

Do a search of the archives for headlight relay or sucro. He (Marcus Sucro) sells a wired relay with instructions for $20.
Also, nostatic on Pelican did a step by step with pictures of his relay install using the Sucro kit which was very well done.
