Default 1985 relay position for power window??

My 85 cab has an intermittant power window problem . Every couple of weeks all window power stops and returns days later. The fuse is perfect. Im thinking the relay but it is not where the book shows for 85. My first and third relays in front are empty. The first being closest to driver. The only empty one the manual shows is the first, with the third being the window relay. Anyone else have this? Mine is very low mileage and doesn't look tampered with. thanks Doug

isn't the third position for the cruise control? or you mean the actual third hole, in which case you'd be right. the second relay should be the window
there's a square one behind the fuel level gauge also

Its the third whole that is empty?? Should be a relay according to the manual. The one behind the fuel guage ,is that not on the later model only?

Behind the gas guage I have on the right (from the seat) a small round one, a taller square onein the middle and a slightly shorter square one on the left. (all side by side). I do notice a door contact switch on the 85. Could my contact switch be defective? Would one side shut down the whole system? What does the door contact switch have to do with it on the 85?

i would say no, if the key is on it doesn't matter if the door switch is defective or not, it (windows) would still work. I'd swap replays in the front and see what happens, you can pry off the plastic cap and check out the inside of them also

dsmythe: Not sure where Jerry's diagrams came from, but I don't remember early 3.2 Carreras having a power window relay. The #1 & #3 positions, starting from the driver end, should not be occupied, and the fuse #1 (closest to the driver) should be for the power windows and sunroof (obviously windows only on your car). Keep a test light in the car, the next time the windows won't work check both window fuse terminals for 12V. Also, you say that the fuse is perfect, did you establish that by removing the fuse? Often, the ceramic fuses can "hide" corrosion, usually at the bottom tip, which is the classic intermittent anything symptom...

Hi Doug,
The power window relay is located behind the gauges as shown in the picture posted by Jerry Brinkley.
The relay part # is 944-615-116-00.
I would get in there and remove the relay while examining the condition of the wiring. Insert the relay and remove it a couple times to clean up the connections. This relay is unique, not the same as others in the car.
It will click on when you turn the ignition key to the accessory or on position.
The windows and sun roof will function as long as the ignition is on.
As Peter Z pointed out, there should be power at the #1 fuse, with the ignition on, and remain on until one of the doors is opened after the ignition is turned off.
The power to the windows should be on as long as the ignition is on, regardless of whether the doors are open or closed.
With the ignition off, the relay will de-energize once a door is opened.
It will not re-energize until the ignition is turned on.
The sun roof is powered from the same fuse.
If the sun roof works while the windows do not, it is likely not the relay.
Intermittent operation indicates a marginal connection.
The relay is listed for $48 at PP.
You can jumper pin 30 and pin 87, the red wire power in to the black wire feeding the #1 fuse.
Or simply jumper power to the #1 fuse to bypass the power window relay.
Use the jumper for a couple days until it is obvious whether the relay is the problem or not.
Good luck and keep us up to date with your progress.
Doug aka 2.7racer

I'm betting on Peter Z's advice about the fuse. Had a similar situation with my '85. The windows didn't work and the fuse looked perfect. I replaced the fuse with a new one (and sanded the contacts at the fuse box while I was at it).
Voila - windows work and have for several years with no other problems.

I have a 84 3.2 RHD, windows only work with ignition on. I believe that some models have the option of working without the ignition. Any ideas on how to ?

All windows should work without ignition on if doors are open only
