What does the R mean after Carrera on a 2002 911

Sounds like an old callsign,....

The only one who uses the designation R on street cars, after a model name is Ruf. For example, they have called their special versions of the GT-3, a GTR.

The Factory has not applied that moniker to any 996 cars, aside from the 996 GT-3R which is strictly a racecar.

I would need a lot more information to offer some insight into what you are looking at (or for).
