Question Starting Problem

Hello Everyone.
Can you tell me what's going on? (FYI, this is a '84 Carrera)
I started having Starter problems. I turn the key and I can hear the Starter motor turning but it not engaging the fly wheel. And then a few days later (this is all intermittant) I would turn the key and all I heard was a click from the Starter. I removed the Starter and took it in to my local Starter/Alternater guy. The inside of the Starter checked out. He replaced the solenoid just in case. The first day everything was fine and now the second day it's acting up again. I removed the Starter again, put it on the bench and tested it, it works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas to solve my problem??
Thanks in advance.
Larry

I forgot to mention, the battery is in good condition, 12.9 volts and the ignition switch is fairly new - less than a year old.

Make sure that the Bendix gear shaft is well lubed (but not overly!) and it's not hanging up. Check wiring for corrosion, breaks or opens.
