I only test drove one 915 tranny, but it wasn't for me. Throws were long and I didn't like the uncertain "am I really in gear?" feeling when I shifted.
Well then you drove a 911/915 that needed shifter or coupler bushings, proper adjustment, new fluid, or all of the above. You do not describe the way my 84 shifts.

Wow, forgot all about this thread. Switching fluid and adding the LSD additive change my tranny like nite and day. I used Kendall synthetic something or other. And no it wasn't rebuilt after all....It was a new clutch.....

No, there wasn't anything wrong with it, it's just the difference in character. When I was doing test drives, I was used to the short, precise throws of my BMW Getrag. The G50 was more like it than the 915.

Sometimes it's just what you're used to.

I'm no expert, and as I stated, I only drove ONE 915. Nothing wrong, just not my preference. Sure am glad to hear yours is the berries and you like it. That's all that matters. There are lots of people who prefer the 915 and there are no shortage of them on the track. Any tranny that can last 20+ yrs can't be bad!!

My advice to anyone considering his or her first 911... drive as many as you can before buying. Then you know what you prefer rather than listening to others argue over it

Well, not to question your mechanical aptitude or anything: How do you know there was nothing wrong with the one you drove?

As Porsche seemed to sell just a few of them, and I think more than a few races and hearts were won with these "sloppy" transmissions, they worked just fine. It cracks me up when someone asks about the 915/G50 "issue" when they read about it. It seems that a thread comes up on the subject every 6 months or so.

My guesstimate is a large majority of the 911/915 versions out there could use new shifter bushings. All of $25 makes a ton of difference. There may be a bit of a longer throw, but a well sorted 915 shifts just fine. The key message here is that if the poster is looking for 84-89 Carreras, the pre-87's should not be overlooked just because they have a different trans. Anyone who says otherwise is really splitting hairs. There are so many more meaningful things to look at on each car which could either have a detrimental effect on one's wallet or driving pleasure.

Well, you're right about suggesting driving as many as possible.

I don't have difficulty getting into second when cold as some folks have mentioned here.
I do have to make sure I completely de-clutch coming out of first when cold, or I get a little clunk upon release.
Otherwise, the thing shifts fine, hot or cold.
I don't know what is in it for lube.
Haven't changed it yet.
Based on discussions I have read here though, I'm thinking Swepco is where I'm headed.

No!, that's for 915 trannies. You have the G50, you should use a good synthetic like Mobile GL-5 75-90 I think.

I like shorter throws....less time.

FWIW, I swapped out the oil in my G-50 and the difference was like night and day. I'm not sure what was in it before, but I put Royal Blue in there, and it is way better. I also get that little clunk on release Ian has experienced- glad it's not just me!

Cheers,

Paul.

Royal Blue ? If it's Royal Purple you're talking about, you might want to change it out. Guys who have been using RP for years have recently noticed premature R&P failures, which suggests a change in oil composition. Smooth shifting does not in any way relate to EP protection ... the true test of an oil's worthiness.
