Default NORTH ON THE 101

I'm thinking of going north on the 101 rather than south this weekend. Ventura, UCSB, Hurst Castle, Solvange....What else is up there? I'll have from early saturday to late sunday. any Ideas? I'll start out on the 210 at the 215 and then its open roads to anywhere...

Solvang is fun, definitely have an order of aeblskivers for breakfast, then head north into the Paso Robles area for some great wine tasting (definitely better than the wine-making area, Santa Ynez, to the east of Solvang, and definitely worth the drive). Of course, to do that it's probably a good idea to like wine, and if you do Google "Paso Robles wineries" before you go! And then there's the always fun Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, certainly worth a stop, stretch your legs, and maybe have lunch. If you go far enough north you'll arrive at Carmel Valley, which has some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere. Go into Carmel, there are lot's of little shops art galleries, etc. You might find yourself falling in love with the area!

Hello there. Suggest you take 101 north to Santa Barbara but then route yourself over Rt 154 (San Marcos Pass). A really fun Porsche road is the OLD San Marcos Pass Road,--which joins later with 154. Take 101 N. past SB and go past the El Sueno exist, and take Turnpike offramp. Head right toward the mountains. Follow Turnpike to Cathedral Oaks Rd. Left at the light onto Cathedral Oaks. Take it to the very next light,--San Marcos road. Follow it. Stay straight on it. It will eventually climb up through a series of switchbacks to Rt 154. Then CROSS San Marcos Pass Rd (Rt 154) onto Painted Cave Rd and follow it until it joins with E. Camino Cielo. Take a left onto E. Camino Cielo and follow it to San Marcos Pass Rd. (154). Then take a right onto 154 and follow it to Solvang. At Solvang take a LEFT onto Alisal Rd (that's the main drag) and follow it all the way to Nojoqui State Park. (Good break stop). Get back onto Alisal Rd but exit the park, going to the LEFT this time. It will take you to Rt 101. Suggest you take 101 North a bit until you can exit at Los Alamos. Then follow the neighboring route 135 to Harris Grade Rd toward Lompoc. Turn right onto Rt 1 toward Vandenberg AFB and follow rt 1 until (at the base of the hill) to find San Antonio Creek Rd West on your left. Follow it to Casmalia, and then on toward Guadalupe. Dinner at Far Western Tavern. Great steaks. Then exit out to Pismo Beach and return via Rt 101.

Dan, Peter, I knew you guys would come thru for me. I think I got stuck in that 154 canyon road during a fire and had to be escorted out about 10 years ago. I'll print this out and hit AAA on the way home for a good map.

Enjoy your weekend, Douglas, that area is filled with wonderful roads and equally wonderful places to stop at! And taking San Marcos pass into Solvang is a must!

Check this site out for California roads

It's compiled by motorcyclists, so you know there are good dips and turns...
