Default Engine number

Hi.
Anyone knows a way to find out the engine number of a 70´s 911E thru it´s Vin number or other way?
I noticed that the engine number is disappearing due to bad maintenance or probably corrosion and i can only tell the first three numbers (620). I have heard that Porsche official dealers or workshops have a database with all that data, is that true??
Thanks in advance for any help.

welcome to the 'list!

if i'm reading my redbook right "620" would indicate its a MY1970 with a sporto and would have a chassis number between 9110200001 and 9110201304

someone here will be able to shed more light

cheers,

JV

edit: is the engine number on your registration papers?
They are here in Aus...but that doesnt mean they're "matching numbers"

hello,

"matching numbers" as in the engine is the original one that came with that specific chassis.

a dealer should be able to tell you what specific engine number originally came with a specific chassis number

cheers,

JV

I do not think this is true. PCNA handles the "Certificate Of Authenticity" activity, not the dealers. If you have a good friend at a dealership, they MIGHT be able to call PCNA for you and verify whether a chassis VIN matches an engine serial number, but you MUST have both complete numbers, and they will only verify whether they match, they will NOT give you the other matching number if you only have one.

If you can't read your serial number, your only choice is to buy the COA for your car, which has been overpriced these days, considering the innaccuracy of information delivered that I have heard about lately.

Porsche AG actually has the matching numbers for engines and VINs,--unlike PCNA which is subject to a lot of errors. The Germans are historically fanatic about record keeping. Contact PAG in Zuffenhausen.

Ya, if you have a friend at the factory, you are liable to get much better info from the original Kardex than from a COA from PCNA. Previously, you could email a certain person at PAG and get this info for free, but that loophole has been closed due to the demand generated by the Early S guys when it was discovered and publicized on their forum. Now, you need to pay for the COA in Germany just like you do in the USA, although the info may be more accurate from the fatherland.
