Looking to buy a 1991 C2. The "books" say along with problems with failure of the "dual mass flywheel," the engine design omitting cylinder head gaskets lead to oil leaks in the early 3.6L 964 cars. This was corrected some time in 1991-92 model years. I am looking at a specific car and want to know if this is a potential problem. Is there a list of VINs or manufacturing dates when the cylinder head gasket problem was fixed.

Yes, there's an exact engine number past which the problem was fixed. Do a search on the 964 board for an exact answer. In case you didn't know, the 911's made from 1989.5 to 1994 are also known as 964's.

Keep in mind that the cylinder sealing problem (not really an oil leak problem) for early 964 motors occurred in a very small percentage of cars, maybe 1%. Though 1% is small, Porsche was quick to correct the sealing problem because 1% is too high for a car of their caliber.
The early 964 motor had a carbon ring embedded in the cylinder head surface that mates to the outer cylinder face. To correct the problem, the ring was moved to a groove in the mating face of the cylinder, and the configuration of the cylinder head surface was changed slightly. The actual cause of the problem with the early sealing method was due to distortion of the cylinder head when the cylinder head nuts were tightened.
I have a 1990 964 motor with 90K miles and the compression is faultless.

I have never seen/actually heard of a car with this problem. Bit of a myth.
Anyway, do check out <a href="http://www.porsche964.co.uk" target="_blank">My 964 Site</a>. Over 100Mb of 964 Content.
Check out the Reviews page and its Buying Guide section, also the Running Reports from 20 964 owners and plenty of magazine reprints......
...and then do come back and ask some questions on the Rennlist 964 Forum or on our <a href="http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/964porsche" target="_blank">964 SmartGroup</a>.
