911 winter driving
Hello all.
I am in the process of buying a 1982 911 SC from a friend and (fellow) Porsche fanatic. I'm very excited, but I have one question regarding winter driving.
The current owner of the car warned me that it does not like to drive in snow and tends to spin out over 40 mph in snowy conditions. The car currently has snow tires, and I wouldn't drive it in the snow, but will I run into problems driving it in the winter when there isn't any snow/ice?
Thanks!

As someone who just this past winter(out of necessity)used my 1986 930 I can say that you will not have a problem when the ground is clean. I would not even attempt to use performance tires during the winter. During the first snowstorm of the year I had my SO3's on and it only took driving out of the parking lot to realize I wasn't going anywhere(except back in the lot with considerable effort-and only with about 2in. of snow on the ground). I the picked up some Nokian studded snow tires and WOW what a difference. No problem in the snow. Dry performance was nil, but hey, that's not what these tires are for. If you plan on driving in Mass. in the winter, I'd advise you to keep the snow tires and consider either getting them studded(if possible) or cheking out the nokians. Good luck.
Ryan,
I dove my 1981 911SC from South Florida to Northern Pennsylvania during the Christmas holiday. Even with worn Yokohama Avids (A/S), I was able to get around for two weeks -- it snowed every day! Having the engine over (behind) the rear wheels is great for traction. The only problem is getting grounded if the snow is higher than the underside of the car. I'm not suggesting you drive your Porsche every time it snows, but with snow tires, you shouldn't have a problem getting home. Good Luck!
