I just replaced my cap & rotor after the center electrode in the cap broke(!) yesterday morning. I left the heater ducts in place and used a really long, thin screwdriver to release the clip on the left side of the cap. Getting the wires off the old cap was a pain, but doable.
Man just take the heater ducts off, very easy to do and makes everything else a lot easier!
The distributor shaft was a little rusty underneath the rotor. Is there something I could/should use to lubricate the inside of the distributor?
Just put a drop of oil on the felt wick underneath the rotor. This will slowly flow down and keep the mechanical advance mechanism lubed, and keep it from seizing up, which can and will happen. This is an often overlooked maintenance step, I do it every time I service a car when I'm checking the condition of the ignition components. Do it every oil change, or any other time you have the cap off.
