Default Keep my ///M3 or trade for '86 911?

I have a 1998.5 Technoviolet ///M3 with 112K miles. I have a guy nearby with a 1986 guards red on black 911. It has the whale tail(meh) and is claimed to be a euro car. It's in great shape and I know the lady who owned it took it in to a very reputable shop and had all work or needed updates done. It has 101K on it and my biggest concern is how much more expensive it is to keep the 911 on the road compared to my Bimmer? Sorry for the n00b question but I have wanted a 911 since high school when I drove a ratty 914. I have had 8 BMW's and I am thinking about taking the step to the 911.

Here is my M3

Hmmm, I dont think it would cost any more to keep the Porsche on the road than it would the M3. Both cars are pretty strong but have similar weaknesses. The 3.2 has it's valve issues as does the M3 with it's VANOS and rebuild costs are about the same, well over here they are. General consumables are pretty normal price wise on the 911, look through pelican and compare as they sell both BMW and 911 parts.

Get the 911 you wont regret it!

If it's going to be a daily driver, and a/c is important to you, keep the M3.

trade it, it's heavy, and in my case, slow.

The two cars are completely different animals. The Carrera engages the driver at all times, no dragging the nuckles out the window or laying back in the seat. Its two hands on the wheel and a sence of purpose everytime you get behind the wheel. You should drive several versions of the Porsche (SC, Carrera, 964, 993) and find your comfort level. One thing for certain you deserve a Porsche!

first off...how did you get to post a picture as a user on your first post? good job...your in the club for sure now.

here is the difference in the two cars. traffic has both cars bogged down side by side on the 101 to 40 miles per hour. you are stuck in second geat at 3,500 rpm's, top down, Van Halen blasting on the blaupunkt. traffic opens up for a good quarter mile ahead and the BMW strugles to move. You double clutch the 911 and it cherps the tires throwing it sidways and instantly you are in the rev limiter. Third gear and you are at 100mph. fourth gear and you see 120mph quickly approaching and the BMW a quarter mile back, a distant memory. this evening with the sore muscles in the front of my neck I get every saturday morning when I get her out of the shed I think back at this being the best birthday present my wife of 18 years ever gave me. that is the differance in the 911 and that BMW. welcome aboard.

Get the 999911. LOL. Seriously. Just drive it and see if you like it. The 911 will cost you anywhere from $200 to $10,000 per year.

Buy the 911 as a second car and keep the M3 as the DD.

Doug, it's hosted outside of the forum. ANYONE should be able to do that. Only folks who have been here awhile can directly embed in the post.

Nice car Gregg. If you're doing your own work, the 911 is not that bad to maintain. Going beyond that, like the stuff I just did to my suspension & brakes (Bilsteins, new torsion bars, bushings, tie rods, ball joints, rotors, pads, etc etc) was a few grand. Clutch jobs seem pretty pricey right now, and trans rebuilds moreso.

Good luck!

You are asking on the 911 forum....so we may be a bit biased. I believe there have been other threads discussing these two cars. If it were a daily driver I would say stick with the M3. As a "fun" car I would pick the 911 every time. Good luck with your decision.

No, just kidding with the original poster with his "///M3." I'm not quite sure why "M3" doesn't suffice.

I don't agree with some of these posts ..as you well know the m3 would have no trouble at all to move if the road opened up, it is avery fine car indeed. Personally i agree with the comment they are different cars. The BMW is a much more comfortable car with very sporting attributes. The 911 is all work , spartan on the luxury, but a whole lot of fun .

I think a better comparison would be a 993 to your M3 from a creature comfort standpoint.

I know, I can only dream of being torn between two German cars. Kinda like on 10,000 maniacs when they pull the girl apart with 4 hourse power. That's about as close as I will ever come to the above situation......I did however once jump a BMW cab over the tracks at George Mason U. in NOVA when I was a kid...that car could fly.
