Default $73,436 for a new 1984 Carrera Targa

OK, now that I have your hopes up, let me explain.

I found the original sales contract for my 1984 Carrera, written on 1/26/84. The cost was $37,820 which included sports seats, a special steering wheel and alloy wheels ($1580 for the wheels).

Using a conversion factor I found on an Oregon State web site, that converts to $73,436 in 2006 dollars.

I guess that would be about the price of a well equipped Cayman these days.

always amazes me how cheap cars are in the states

a cayman here is US$100k plus on road costs, cayman s is US $120k, 997 carrera s is $185k

i remember seeing an original sales docket for an 89 carrera that i looked at...$186k in 1989 $ !

Then again, $73,000 barely gets you a "new" 2007 911. So. overall, prices haven't really changed too much. And consider now a new 911 is a much faster, larger, safer car with tons more technology than your 1984 example.

If you think about it, a current GT3 or 997 TT is actually "cheaper" than a, say , fully optioned (ie slantnose) 911 Turbo that would have cost close to $100K back in 1988.

True on the Turbo. My former '76 930 was $29,000 new, which works out to $102,000 in 2006 money. Very primitive car; no comparison to a 997 GT3, which, by these sort of comparisons, is a totally amazing bargain.

Here is a cool value of the dollar calculator

http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm

My 1982 Targa was $32,000, 67,291 in todays dollar

My parents purvhsed their house on Long Island for $16,000 back in 1965,
$101,692 in today's dollar and the average price of homes in the neighborhood is close to $400k.

Keep in mind, those calculators are very general- pricing on cars may have been affected differently as an inflation percentage than the price of corn, houses, shoes, etc, etc.
