Post Can 915 handle 400hp?

I am looking at a DE car (1983 SC) with a 3.4 Turbo motor conversion which has a claimed 400HP (RUF P&C's). The owner says that the car has the original 915 transmission and that it was rebuilt last year. Any thoughts about a 915 handling that much power? I had heard that they were good up to about 300 HP. Did the 930s use a different gearbox?
Thank you.

They had a 4 speed gearbox until the hmmm... late eighties. I do not know if this 4 speed box was based on the 915 or not. And yes, hp/torque concerns were the reason.

The 4 speed used in the 911 turbo until 1988 was not based on the 915. In 1989, the 911 Turbo was given the G50 5 speed. I know of several people running a 915 5 speed in a 911 Turbo, but as pointed out above these transmissions were not meant for that kind of power. You should check with Steve Weiner (Rennsport Systems) or Stephen Kasper (Imagine Auto), both turbo experts, as to the longevity of the 915 in that application.

If you consider that the G50 was introduced to the 911 line in '87, on a 220 HP drivetrain, & thoroughly "shaken out" for the C2 drivetrain (@ what, about 260 HP?)... then I think you have the factory's position on the standard 915's limits for reliability & longevity.

My buddy runs a 79 SC with a supercharger and 3.2 P/C conversions and he has no problems with the 915 in his car. Probably not 400hp, but quite a bit of torque. Here is his webpage, email him, he likes to talk about his cars and he is also on the 911 rennlist. YMMV

i have a 915 tranny with a 3.2 shortstroke turbo in my sc cab. i do not have any problems but i do not lanch the car off the line and i do not abuse the tranny. if you are looking to lanch off the line and want faster shifting the 915 is not for u. i am going to look for a stronger tranny this winter when i save up a couple of bucks. the other thing i do not like about the tranny is if falls out of boost from 1 to 2 because of the slow shifting i have to do. i have a short throw shifter in the car which does not help. i have about 300 rearwheel horse power by the way
