Default Vanilla Ice: Gambella 911 Cab based on 89 Coupe

This is a shot in the dark, but does anyone know what happened to the 89 Coupe turned Cabrio Gambella 911 that was deatured on the cover of the DuPont Registry back in 1992 or 1993? I remember reading that article in college as I was at the early stages of my Porsche addiction. I haven't seen that issue in years, but remember that Vanilla Ice (the rapper) paid $50K for a mint 911 coupe, and then spent $500K (or so he claimed) with Gambella to make the car ENTIRELY white (and I mean everything).

At the time, I had not been aware that someone would or could spend 10x the cost of the car on mods/personalization.... I guess I am just more of a "factory finish" kind of guy...

Thanks,
-B

Someone probably spent another 400K restoring it to an original 911 coupe.

Hopefully it spent some quality time in a car crusher.

Leave it to a DB like Vanilla Ice to take a perfectly good coupe and hack the top off.
Too bad it wasn't today...he could have had the neon-undercarriage treatment and spinners....

With $500K in 1992 dollars invested, what is it worth today???? Is there a market for 1980s/1990's Gambella Avalanch cars? I just want to find out what happened to it...

Nice '75 911 Kerry - I went to college in Baltimore and spent many weekends with my '79 Targa back in the day hanging out in Fells Point...

94Speedster,

Thanks! It's a car I have known for over 20 years, and finally got it from my friend about 3 months ago.

Actually, I live right in Fells Point. Moved to B-more back in 95 and love it. If you haven't been here in a while, you would be amazed....

Remember; we're talking about a guy who thought a 5.0 Mustang was cool...

I left Baltimore in the spring of 1997 and haven't been back since. I can only imagine what it looks like now! When i got there as a freshman, the Inner Habor was a brand new revitalization project!

Enjoy that classic 1975 911. Nothing like taking that car up I-83 into the horse country - there are SO many beautiful country roads...

Enjoy!

Hmmm - $ 4750? without the Vanilla Ice connection $4500.

Of course - get a PPI

I agree with you Jerry... I'd much rather take the original 89 coupe... I am always amazed at how easy it is for rock stars to blow away money - whether its up their nose or on horrible investments like this moded Porsche...
