Default Weird tire size...

As many of you know from my 5 million posts over the past few days, I just bought a '76 911 that's been concerted to "Carrera-look" at some point.

It's time for tires, and the existing ones are 205/50R15. I kinda like the wider tire, and there are plenty of affordable options in that size on tirerack, but a few people have commented that it seems to sit higher than normal...

So the question is, do i stick with the wider tire or go back to original (something like 180/70R15 if memory serves correctly...) or something different entirely....

What would you guys do?

Here's a pic that shows how it sits with the current tires:

THANKS!

Jeff

Hey there.
Those tires you have are very short in diameter...the original size would actually be taller.

Wow... I didn't realize how short they actually are. If my calculations are right, the 205s are 23.07" diameter and the 185s are 25.196" diameter... They're like 10% shorter than stock? Can that be right?

Yes.
That sounds about right to me.
The current sizes you have are good for autocross, although I believe you can run wider.
Some other options would be a 205x55 front & 225x50 rear, if you like that basic set-up.
Depending on the width of your wheels, you could also do up to a 225/245, etc.

Justa FYI
My '76 C3 came w/ 7 & 8 x15 Fuchs w/ 205/50 & 225/50 x15 tires.

They are much shorter and lower the car considerably relative to the regular 911 fitment(at that time) of 6x15 and 185/70 x15 all around

If you still have the 15" wheels(hopefully the correct 7 & 8" versions) 205/55f and 225/50 rear should be a good fit.
