I am not as up on my Carreras as I am SCs but if you have a 915 transmision you should not put Synthetic in it , but if Carreras all have G50s then I iwll let the G50 guys talk.

Douglas, you need me to say high to the fam? My wife and I are flying out to Kona on the 16th. We'll be there until the 28th. Maybe you could hook me up with a better car for the trip!

I have no idea what type of trans this car has.
Is there somewhere to look on the trans?
Would the VIN tell me?

When you get in it to drive it .. you'll know .....

the 915 is an old school transmision where you have to know where each gear is and takes some learning to drive smoothly, this is what i have and although I found it akward at first , i ove it now .

The G50 was made by Getrag for Porsche, a much more modern transmision with crisper shifting. You get guys who like both. Pete Z would be able to tell you for sure how to tell . As I said maybe all the Carreras had G50s, I am not sure. ither way you should be fine , they are just different animals that have to be driven and treated differently.

G50's came in the '87's, '88's, and '89's...

Not sure about the '86's???

All 915's before that (unless the PO switched something!)

Okay I found out the car has a 915, so now the question is why shouldn't I put synthetic in the 915 trans?
And what brand of dino should I put in the trans? Does Porsche have a recommended tranny oil?
Sorry for all the noob questions, just trying to understand and learn about my future car when it gets here.
I'll do a search as well.

For some reason Swepco 201 receives universal praise for use in the 915. I've never learned the whole story behind it. FWIW, I've had Mobile 1 synthetic in my 915 for 10,000 miles. I'm going to change to Swepco 201 and see if I notice a difference. The rationale for avoiding synthetic that I've heard repeatedly is that the synthetic is too slippery for the synchros.

I know for most cars that have an LSD, should put in an additive for the clutch discs in the diff however, I'm not familiar with the Porsche LSD.
My Amsoil rep says I don't need the additive in my 4.27:1 LSD, but it's in there for safety.
A friend of mine uses the Swepco 201 and I was surprised to see it was blue!
Is the LSD in the tranny?

It is a transaxle. Gears and differential in one housing.

Thanks!
Like I said, I'm a newbie with the Porsche and appreciate all the info.

From my search, it seems like the majority says to use Swepco 201.

I also did a search on the WEVO short shifter, and it seems to be at about 50% pro and anti short shifter. I guess I'll need to drive it more to understand what everyone is talking about. Seems like there's a chance of going from 5th to reverse

do't me doing any mods until you learn the car, but I would say going from 4th to 3rd under power instead of 4th to 5th is the far greater risk.

Synthetic Lube in a 915 (or a 901 Transaxle) = PROBLEMS!!!

Will it always cause issues??? No... some folks are just luckier than others...

But why try and fool with Mother Nature? Porsche intended these to run Dinosaur Lube...

Pump it full of 75w90, with LSD additive if you have a LSD, and go drive the darn thing!

Castrol Trans Oil is fine, but there are a dozen other brands out there that will work as well...

Swepco/Amsoil/Royal Purple, et. al. MAY work just fine... or they may cause your tranny to p*ss all over your garage floor, shift poorly, and contribute to a $3,000.00 rebuild...

"Are you feeling lucky??? Well? Are you? " ;.))

LOL! 915s are fitted to '84-86 Carreras; '87-89 has the G 50. '86951 is correct, no synthetic oil in a 915 - the synchros work with friction, synthetic oil reduces friction...

"Castrol Trans Oil is fine... Swepco...MAY work just fine..." ????

I so confused!! I know that I read somewhere to ONLY use Swepco and ordered that. Opinions may vary, but I'm about to drain the synthetic from my 915 and have purchased Swepco to go in it. Maybe someone can direct me to a string where this debate was settled.
