Carrera 3.2 erratic idle.
Hello to all,
I have a 911 Carrera 3.2 (1987) and I am having some trouble with my idle. I have changed the idle positioner valve but is still erratic.
Some times when I accelerate the car from standstill and depress the accelerator the needle goes to 300 rpm and bounces back and forth to 1000 rpm 2 or 3 times until stabilises at 900 rpm.
I have checked for air leaks and nothing appears to be loose. The car has been serviced recently, but it did not improved. Car is in very good condition with only 70K miles.0.3 liters per 1000 miles, very good indeed for mileage.
Could anybody give some hints about what is happening? It bothers me a lot not to have a solid rock idle.
I also had the butterfly body cleaned.
Another question is that I can not find the oxigen sensor, I know it is attachted to the pre-muffler, but it seems this has been changed by an after market unit and the sensor jumped wired.
Please somebody there to give me a solution.
Best regards,
Antonio Navajas

I had the same problem. Here's what I did: Replaced the O-2 sensor, replaced the cylinder head temp sensor, replaced the idle control valve. None of these fixed the problem. Then someone suggested I get the mixture checked and adjusted. I did just that, and now the idle is rock solid.

I'm not a technical expert so I can't give you any details, but my car was basically running on 5 cylinders on idle due to some sort of injection problem. As soon as I hit the accelerator all cylinders fired up and it did run normal. As you can understand this caused an irratic pop-pop-pop sort of idle. I took the car to a reputable independent Porsche specialist who did try a lot of things but couldn't sort it out, however he ruled a lot of things out, so we ended up taking the car to Bosch who calibrated the injection (I think) and fuel mixture. Now it runs perfectly.

Antonio,
Where in Spain are you located? Contact me offline (carlos_artal@terra.es) and I can provide you with the contact details for the best porsche guy in Madrid (not official).
I had a similar problem, and it was solved by changing the fuel rail, and temperature sensor.
Un saludo!
