Default Catalytic Converter.

Simple question or two. What year did catalytic converters show up on 911's? Was it 1974? And how old does a car need to be, to be emmisions exempt? Or does that vary state to state?

Mark: The first 911 to use a cat was the '78 SC, and emissions rules vary greatly from state to state.

In California, the car has to be 30 years old or older to be exempt.

25 here in RI... Gee what a coincidence, exactly when my current 2-year sticker expires on my 84...

I found out on one of the state of Illinois web sites that any car 1968 or older is exempt. Or any car that is 1995 or older and has passed the test since Feb. 07 is now exempt.

The reason I was asking is that I'm planning on building a '73 RSR replica. It seems that if you are willing to start with a newer tub, the odds of finding something straight and rust free are better. The down side is the cost of back dating.
