Interesting story. Who would have thought there was someplace in Waymart that would even take in a Porsche, given that it is a teeny little town in the middle of nowhere.
Some years ago a BMW dealer near me took in a Countach to change a thermostat. The mechanic then took it for a brief ride and someone made an illegal left turn in front of him. Countach totalled, but the police cited the other driver.
My nephew worked as a service writer at a Lexus dealership about 4 years ago. This particular dealership liked to buy used 911's for their used car inventory. They took in trade a very mint Guards Red 1995 993 on a new Lexus. The car was essentially stored in a bubble, was mint and had 22,000 miles on it when the owner traded it. He was given top dollar for the trade since it was such a nice car. My nephew knows Porsche well enough to spot a good car.
On the third day of this 993 being at the dealership, a young service tech told my nephew that he was going to perform the "safety inspection" on the car including a road test. My nephew warned them to be careful, but since he was not their direct supervisor, didn't have the power to stop them from using the car. So, during the lunch hour, this young tech and his buddy "safety inspected" the car and took it out. It was November and the roads in Wisconsin in November can get slippery from wet leaves and moist conditions.
The service tech promptly got the car sideways in a 25 mph corner doing about 50 or so (per the police report), t-boned the car on a tree and guard rail and totalled it. The driver walked away, but the passenger was hurt. My nephew saw the car when it was towed back to the dealership... He said it hurt to see the car after the accident because it was so cherry when they got it on trade.
The tech was promptly fired, but we lost yet another pristine 993 that day...
Uhm...it might be just me but no matter how dumb or misguided or unlucky someone is I think the focus in this case should rest on the injured human-being not the inanimate hunk of metal.
A Porsche is a nice car but it's just a car. We would all do fine even if all the 993's were wiped from the face of the earth.

Oh-oh....looks like the sensitivity training warning light is going off.....I don't think he meant that he was happy to see the guy hurt...only that he received some form of punishment for his transgression. No one wants to see someone seriously hurt.....but we do like to see some form of "justice" meted out. The problem becomes one of what you consider is justice. How many times do you suppose the "test driver" isn't hurt, but returns the car with internal damage not noticeable as a dent or abrasion...and the damage is simply noted as "needs new clutch", or "brake rotor warped". Guess who pays for that? The issue becomes one of seeing appropriate punishment reveived for abusing a customer's car. We can get hung up on what we consider as is "appropriate punishment".
