Default 1972 911T - thoughts as project car?

I found a 1972 911T locally, for pretty cheap, around $5k.

It has SC fiberglass fenders, air dam, and a whale tail. Paint is faded but no signs of damage the guy says. A few small rust spots, but all small (he says).

Odo is 19,000km and the owner does not think it was working when he parked the car and never did the project part of a project car :-)

It has an unknown history 2.4 that was running when parked. Only mods were MSD ignition.

What is the bottom of the bucket value of one of these cars? I am looking for a project in the near future... so this might fit the bill.

I plan to check out the car and verify later today... I'd like any thoughts from you folks, first!

Thanks!

Pictures man, pictures. I would ****** her up for 5grand. Just remember it will never be a C4. It would be a great track car, but an even better restoration. You will be into her for $20,000 no matter what you do. just go slow.

Douglas,

thanks for the quick reply. My gut is yes, ****** it up for $5k and if it sits in the garage for a while, no big deal.

I recently drove a friends completely restored mid-70s with an RS-spec 6-weber motor and it reignited my desire for a 70's 911.

$20k, NEVER! No way... ahahahahah! Someone say money pit?

cheers, will post pics after I go see it this evening,

Mike

pick up some of the books on early cars. I spent months reading before I ever even started looking. then went back and read them again. "original porsche 911" was porno good. the RS idea is perfect for that car.

The "early" longhoods are steadly going up in price. 72's are especially attractive. If minimal rust issues, and most everything (trim, drivetrain, interior, suspension, glass, etc.) is there, I'd jump on it.

the '72 has a unique feature - the ext oil filler on the right rear fender - some long-hood enthusiasts lust for that. your description indicates a dubious history (mods) and unclear current condition. in order, the most important aspects are the physical condition of the chassis, overall completeness, the mechanical condition & the interior condition. a '72 is highly collectable if an original, no-stories survivor... otherwise, it is indeed a project car and will be expensive to make as-original. of course, it could make a fine basis for a RS clone of some flavor. have an expert in early 911 body carefully inspect the chassis condition for overall integrity and required panel repairs & have a 911 engine mechanic evaluate the motor. good luck!

Mike, have you ever heard of the $20K rule? Simply stated, every Porsche is a $20K Porsche, either up front for a good car, or in fixes and repairs to bring it up to par. Not sure if this applies to 964s like yours, but it certainly does to older cars. I paid $10500 for mine, and it's a $20K car, no doubt, or at least well on its way there, with some distance to go...

Yup paid same here...paid 12g for mine from a friend..spent two full weeks cleaning the **** out of it...only thing so far is a broken rear sway mount and a very minor oil drip off the cam cover. What it needs is a new carbon fiber dash ...new seats and a few other minor things...plus my upgrades...Im sure it will hit 20gs.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.

I looked at it last night. It was pretty rough. A fair amount of rust. Some thru the floor.. The pan doesnt scare me, but some corners and up a few inches into the body does.

It has wide, SC maybe Turbo on front, fiberglass flares on it.

Chris - has an MSD ignition hooked up to the factory MFI injection stuff.

I'm going to pass on the car.. even at $5500, I think it'd be *more* than a $20k Porsche. I think I'll get my coupe satisfaction buying a somewhat sorted $10-15k car and put the small things into it :-)

If anyone is looking for something like this, the car is near Cincinnati and I bet you could get it for $4k or less.
