Buy a 95 993 Carrera 4 ???
I live in So. Ca. and drive an 86 911 Carrera to & from work.
I have an opportunity to buy a 1995 993 Carrera 4 at a very good price. I do not need the 4x4 but its there. Any body have experience with a 993 Carrera 4? What are some of the pluses and what are some on the negitives?
Thanks

I am a big propenent of awd cars, in my family we have had at least 1 audi Quattro for the last 12 years. And even if you live in a warm climate you can experience the benifits of awd. When ever it rails, or there is a loss of traction at a wheel for any reason the awd helps make controling the car a bit easier. Not everyone loves the feel of awd, but if you give it a try you just migh find that you like it. I used to drive my nieghbor's 993 Carrera 4 (very nice man to let me drive it) but it was great when applying the throttle it would get all the power down and it was a great car to drive, it is the only 993 I have driven so I can't compare.
The downside of awd is wieght, those systems are heavy and they eat up more hp than a rwd system. For example we have had a volvo 850R and a v70r, same car, except on was fwd one was awd. If launched in the dry the fwd car would crush the awd one (as speeds improved so would that gap). In the wet the awd car would be off the line much quicker, but accelerating form 50 to 80 the fwd car was always faster.
What does all this mean? Well it means that it is a matter of preferance, do you prefer low wieght or high grip? I say drive the sucker and see what you think. A 993 C4 is on my list of cars I must own (it comes before the 993 Twin Turbo because I figure I'll be able to afford the C4 first).
I hope this wasn't too long, as always I tend to ramble.

I owned a 993 C2. I did at one time test
drive a 993 C4. One thing I noticed is that
the C2 was a little more nimble going into 90
degree turns on the city streets compared to
the C4. The C2 front end seemed lighter. The conditions were dry, going about 30 mph.

I was considering a C4 as well. Even though I live in SoCal, the modest difference in price seemed worth it, and like Ian, wanted that extra margin of safety.
Then I drove one. It wasn't "bad," just felt "different" in ways I didn't like. Then some told me of the added potential costs in maintainence (added diffs, access to clutch, and the like). If I had the means, I'd own BOTH a C2 cab as a daily driver and a C4 Coupe for foul-weather duty...hey I can dream, can't I But on my modest means (though still lucky enough to afford the dream car) I opted for the 993 C2 and love it!!!
It'd be nice to have a c4, especially a C4S (!!!) but since you say you don't really need an awd, I'd stick with the lighter, simpler 2wd, IMHO.

I guess I can chime in here considering I owned an '89 911 cab before purchasing a 993 C4. I love it and I think you will as well. And as far as all of this talk of "extra weight", the difference between the 2 and 4 is 110 pounds as stated in my owners manual. The performance difference 0-60 is 1/10th of a second. To me, I'd rather have my awd. Good luck.
