Okay so I gave up doing it that hard way after going to all that trouble and realizing there is no way to get a wire down from the instrument panel to under the dash , so I put everything back as it was, put the wheel on and started over ....
took the light switch out , tok off a tap for the instruments off the rheostat and was done in ten minutes ...

you know ice, I have a new stereo that tells that in the display. Wasn't that cheap either, but since I was up grading for a new pioneer, it came with it. friend of mine has one positioned underneath his CD player of his saturn. It hooks into the power line of the stereo system. I think that might be a little easier. His is nice because it just plugs into a LCD screen like a calculator and he can hide it inside his ash tray. Just a thought.

oh I was afraid of this .. you all want to see a pic now right ?
okay it's nothing fancy but it works for me ... . I rotated it so I could see the range I wanted . If the pic is not here on my laptop I'll post it from my PC later ... it is mounted under the ashtray. I did not want to cut into anything so I built a bracket and bolted it to the back of the ashtray.

Hey that's a good Idea!!
You could always get rid of thet VERY HEAVY radio and fit 3 gauges in the hole it leaves
Isn't the sound of the flat 6 music to your ears??

Yeah i just loved the sound of that missed shift ...
Actually my Audi has the 3 auxillary guages in the sport model I have and I really do like them . That idea might actualy be worth considering. I never have the radio on anyway ... when I'm buy myself .... but when my wife is with me and starts listing the honey do list .. it is handy to have ..
