Default R-414B

Does anyone have any experience with R-414B in their cars? Its supposed to be a direct replacement for R-12. No need for any hose or lubricant changes.

Thanks!

I wonder why its not suitable for auto use? It was recommended by the PCA Tech Q&A board.

Anyone else? I need to decide whether to top up my R12 system somehow or retrofit 134a soon, as summer's coming...

Most a/c shops won't work on your car once you've mixed Freeze-12 with R-12 because they don't want to contaminate their equipment.

If the car is holding R-12, and you just need a top-off, I'd have a qualified shop do just that. On the other hand, if you have the original non-barrier hoses that leak, then there's no point in spending money on R-12 that will only just leak out again. If you have the original hoses and don't want to change them to barrier hoses, you might consider converting to R-134. At least that way, a shop will still work on the car for you or you can even DIY by purchasing R-134 at your local parts shop. If you have the original hoses, though, you'll be needing R-134 every year or so.

My $.02.

I agree with scottb-I had mine converted to 134 with no problems at all and blows 42 deg. out the vent. However during extremely hot temps. the air flow thru the condensers when driving slow don't provide good cooling but on the highway it's just fine. We also couldn't locate any leaks with the old hoses so time will tell.

Did you have to do any changes to the system for the R134? What is the least needed done to convert to R134? Can one keep the old hoses and compressor?

Thanks,

David
