Wink Heating Problem Kinda lIke Andrews

On my 1980SC I have to pull the lever up (one lever) and thats how I get my heat. I think I also turn the dial but to be honest, it only heats up to around just above room temp. I am of course new to this all. I know the automatic thing is not hooked up because if you turn that dial, the lever just sits and chills. (California Lingo) I think the blower works but only after 2500rpm. I may be imagining this but it only seems to heat up once I get on the highway after 7min of in town driving. I do have the mechanics manual but that didn't really explain the mechanics of it. If anyone could help walk a fish through I would appreciate your time.

On the manual heat cars, when your feet got cold, you pull up the red lever(s) which pulls a cable to the flapper boxes in back, piping heat to your feet.

The way the automatic heater box works is, when your feet get cold, you spin the ****, the controller takes a sniff of both sensors (one in the back somewhere, another hanging down between the sun visors), decides your feet probably are cold, then tells a servo to pull the red lever for you.

If everything is connected properly, you should not be able to move the lever by hand. The fact that you can move yours means the connecting rod between the servo and the red lever is not connected. You can pop off the access panel on the passenger side, and pop it back on. You may need to remove the passenger seat to get access, depending on what seats you have.

When you pop that little rod back on, do the ignition on, engine off, turn the **** test. Does the unit make any noise? You should be able to hear the servo running, and see the arm moving.

As to the airflow, when doing the test above, listen for the heater blower to kick on in the engine compartment. It should come on as soon as the lever moves. If the blower doesn't come on, it may be a problem with the switch, or the fuse, (on the fuse block in the engine compartment, or the blower could just be dead. Mine was dead, so I took it apart and removed the squirrel cage fan and reassembled it. The fan really doesn't do much (My wrench tells me "it is for the women") but the non-moving fan will obstruct airflow a bit. Most of the air comes from the engine fan anyway. If you get cold, downshift to get the R's up for more airflow, or open the sunroof/crack a window. Negative pressure from the air moving past the opening will pull air through the heater. It sounds crazy, but trust me it works.

If the heater does anything wierd (like running full hot at any setting, etc) let me know. There is a fairly good TS chart in the Bentley manual, I will look it up for you.

Hope this helps.
