Post Gloves for DE/AutoX?

In my only experience at the track (Zone 2 High Perf. Driving Clinic), most of the instructors used nomex driving gloves, but wore jeans and t-shirts. Do the gloves add much in terms of touch/feel, or is this a safety issue? If it were the latter, why aren't they required, and why aren't more people in nomex driving suits? Are gloves just "track fashion?"

I use my nomex gloves for DE's mainly for consistancy. I drove for a couple of years in NASA and had to wear the full suit. I guess I got used to the feel of the wheel with the gloves.
Actually I think it looks a little goofy to wear gloves with a t-shirt and jeans, but it works for me.

I can't imagine doing DE without the gloves - not for the fire hazard, but for the wear and tear on the hands in a non-power steering car - lot's of sweat as well. Also, in the event of an off or having to climb out or over something. Fire in DE is almost non-existant, but shunts are unfortunately more prevalent. In short any good driving gloves will do, but OG Racing always has some on special.

Alan - what's a shunt? Any other recommendations for brands? I assume the bright colors are to help other drivers see the point bys.

I like the OMP gloves with a single layer suede palm. Some have multiple leather layers which I think dulls the feel. And yes, red is a great color to make point by's more visible.

Shunt equals crumpled <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> sheet metal and possible alternate egress.

Good point about the gloves used for point bys. You really want people to se which side you want them to pass. My gloves are Momo and are quite comfortable.
