Default note for 915 tranny owners

If you have a 915 tranny (?-1986) consider replacing bushings in shifter/coupler if high mileage.

Not that it will fix everything (or even close) on 915 shift but if you have a 915 you probably know we need all the help we can get.

I actually replaced :

The bushings in the coupler in the rear. You have to be carefull you don't damage the coupler but a very doable job.
The donut that the shift bar slides through.
The cup that the ball goes into at the bottom of the shifter.

At the same time I stripped down the shifter, cleaned it up and put a high quality moly grease in their....

can't say it is any better because I did it all before ever driving the car

..oh well . an ounce of prevention.

The other thing to do is go to a Rennshift or Wevo shifter. I installed a Rennshift in a car with 94k on it and the thing shifts like a different car. I thought my tranny was getting tired but the stock shifter is just crap even with new everything IMHO.

I completed a DE last weekend and the car shifted flawlessly.

A rennlist shifter? who has these? i have heard tell that some if not a lot of guys are just getting rid of their so called 930 short shifter and putting the stock 911 shifter back in. hear tell it makes a big difference if everything is rebuilt and a shift coupler is installed and adjusted properly. Is the rennlist an internal unit like the Wevo unit?

It is not a rennlist shifter. It is called Rennshift. Here is their website. http://www.jwesteng.com/porsche/rennshift/ . You can also buy them through Pelican. It is a quality made product.

This takes the place of the whole shifter unlike the Wevo unit.

One huge benefit from this shifter other than taking out all of the slop is it greatly reduces the possibility of missing a shift to the wrong gear.

...and speaking of coupler bushings, the same level of importance goes all the way back to 356s.

+1 BIG improvement, drove the car one race weekend after doing this, popped the motor the same weekend, and then rebuilt the gearbox!

I ordered mine a week ago to help tighten up the shifter. I thought about breaking down the shifter and having it ready for when the bushing arrives but didn't want to play the "memory" game of what screw went where.

I've adjusted the clutch and set the limits. A bottle of Swepco gear oil is keeping the bushing company and the oil change will round out this drive train maintenance.
