Doug

if I were you I would get a good bypass and a muffler along with the chip. Then you can just swap in the cat as you need to. Not sure which but that M&K sounded nice. The beauty is that you can do it yourself relatively easily.

the steve wong stuff just sounds like everyone should send him $350.00 just for being so smart. Porsche should do a recall and give everyone what the new technology has to offer. then just have the local P.D. come in to issue the speeding ticket. it could be put in the box the chip comes in.

Ya mine is very similar to that only i have a 2 out muffler, and your right my only option is to hope it will pass the way it is (unlikely), or put back to stock.

I say take a look at the map, find a cool place to go and take a long weekend with the car. Shouldn't cost a whole lot, and there are some cool drives on the left coast. Pocket the rest until you have a plan. [My plan would be drive more.] I have to agree, a better sound adds to the drive.

SSIs are, no-doubt, the way to go. A rust-free sport muffler logically follows. This is my setup and I can't imagine any better n/a setup without changing heads and cams.

you know I would have done the SSIs already except for 2 small issues... My car leaks oil all over the exchangers and it looks like major work to repair them all.
Those studs look mighty scary with 30 years of rust on them.

I'd go with the B&B headers and a flowmaster muffler, and the chip. Do it after you get smogged, then you enjoy for two years. Scrap the airbox.

What are the odds the inspector won't even know if you have cats or not? There has to be a way to go, assuming you meet the right people, who can make emissions go away for a price. I've "heard" of this thing happening in other states....

BTW, you can get your SSI's from Steve Weiner instead of Pelican. Steve supports this web forum. I bought mine and a Monty muffler from Steve and I am very happy with the results.

I thought the SSI's were no improvement over stock for the 3.2. Did I misunderstand?

I am getting the message from the race car owners that the SSI with duel out's is the only exhaust on the planet. just remember it's a sunday driver cabrio that often lets my wife in for the ride. It can't bee too loud....

the "pre muff" or "euro pre muf" or the "cat bypass" range in price from $170 to $255.

cat back muff at $690 to $862 to $1200 plus

so were at $2,000 with the wong chip and air filter. money left over for a supercharger.

Steve Weiner told me there is no performance difference between a Monty dual out and a Monty single out. But the single out is not obnoxiously loud. My SSI/Monty single out setup is much louder than the stock SC HE's with a catalytic converter.

Also, the SSI's I believe only come in dual out, so you couldn't use a cat bypass or cat for that matter. The existing HE's empty out forward, but the SSI's empty out to the rear, directly into the muffler. That might be a problem in California unless you are willing to bolt out then bolt back in the old HE's and cat every 2 years. Hope that helps.

B&B headers also have a great rep, I think more racers out here are running them on the 3.2 motors than SSI's. For the record, I have a Flowmaster dual out. When I cap one side off, it DOES make 7HP difference on the dyno.

Ed, how is the rebuild? motoer looks good. our cars are very similar and very differnt. I think first move is premuffler. I sell to a chrome shop in riverside that will make it perty. second will be a one in one out. again with the chrome. then the one I really want to do , (but only once) the wong chip.

Ed, when I was a kid, engine reguilds always included rubbing the heads on skateboard deck sand paper to increase compression ratio....are you going to do that? (come on it was funny)
