80SC fuel pump-true scoop
My 80SC fuel pump begins running when the ignition key is in the ON position. I've seen a lot of differing opinions on this. Some say it should begin to run in ON and others state it should only begin running in the START position when the engine is cranking over. Can I get the true scoop on this??? BTW I checked the fuel pump relay and a PO had stuck a piece of thick paper between the large contacts. Any idea why this was done and the effects it would have on pump operation??

There is no way that pump should be running with the ignition on . Only
1. if you are cranking the engine.
2. If you take the air filter cover out and you lift the plate up inside the kidney, There is a micro switch in their that tells the pump to run and takes over from the hot signal to the pump that was active while cranking.

The pump is supposed to operate during cranking, it should never run with the ignition in the "on" position and the engine off. Usually, if the pump runs with ignition the safety switch on the sensor plate housing has inadvertently been left disconnected.
