Default I need a 911.

Welp... I'm currently a 928 owner, and I love the car... but it seems that my whole car-loving life my "realistic" dream car was a 911 Carrera. I searched the forums and I saw a few people said, "Do not get anything below 83(?) if you want decent air conditioning", "1st gear synchros go out!", and "Buy a 3.2! It's so easy to work on!"

Anyway, I want an 80's model- always have, always will. Which model year is best? Why? Why not? I need air conditioning (I'm staying in GA for school).

Blah blah blah... you know, just give me some damn good reasons why a certain year is best to get.

I'm going to have a 1987 911 cabriolet here in about a week to replace the clutch, flywheel, and synchros for a friend. It'll be a good experience. Not only that, but I'll be able to drive it around secretly. Tee-Hee!!! P.S.- My father used to be a Porsche mechanic years ago.

So... discuss! I WANT ONE BADLY!

Genral rule of thumb is get the newest one you can afford. Its true the g50 3.2 cars have better driveability and they still look like the older early 80's cars. Thats probrobly what you want

Marc,

FYI, 87-89 Carreras are the only 3.2 Carreras with the G50 trans. Older ones have 915 transmissions. The G50 is a better trans, but many of us have the 915s and have learned to drive with them. They take some getting used to, and require a gentler hand. The cars with 915s generally sell for significanly less than the G50 cars.

Marq-
not so sure about the 'buy only 1980 plus cars'. I have a 79 930 turbo that has given me 8 years of tremendous pleasure. Drove it to work today and with 40 highway miles, I was doing this walking into the office.
The A/C is weak I will concede but the car has been pretty trouble free. I have chosen to do a few larger things since I have had it (replaced tranny, clutch, pressure plate) but other than regular maintenance, it has been an absolute joy. I have a 1987 928S4 that will be back with me in a few weeks- I bought it last fall and then major maintenance was required immediately. So... I havent seen it since October. Just buy a 911 that has been taken care of and up to date on items relevant to mileage and age. You will love the 911! Good luck.

I too disagree with only getting a later 80's model. I have an 83 cab and love it. Yes, the 915 takes a little getting used to, but as long as you drive it the way it's supposed to be driven, seems to be fine.

All of the A/C's suck thru '89 pretty much, you can make them work with rehab and some aftermarket stuff, but you can dump $2K pretty quickly. As mentioned, go for the newest best you can afford. A few more $ spent on purchase will pay off in lower expenditures after-the-fact.

If it came down to a nicer pre-G50 Carrera, I'd jump on that. The G50's are nice, but not worth sacrificing a well-sorted car with a 915 tranny.

Welcome to the dual "Porschezenship" of owning a 928 and a 911!

Has anyone tried HC12A refrigerant in an older 911? I have found it to have much better cooling properties and appears to be larger molecularly, and therefore doesn't leak as quickly, or perhaps at all in my old K5 Blazer. I have not tried it in my SC yet, but have used it in other older cars with R12 systems.

Thanks guys for the replies so far, it's helping alot actually. Tons of you have sent me PM's regarding the sale of your 911's. All great deals so far, but my father is in on this just as much as I am. We're all about adopting a sweet carerra into the family. We'd love one that has been cared for greatly, but also we wanted to make a project out of it; a restore project, you know.

We're still thinking and talking.... I hope we make a decision soon! We already missed out on a sweet '85 911 convertible earlier because we were late getting to the dealer... some impulse buyer destroyed our dreams...

Marquito,
I'm in the same boat. I have a 928 but hopefully a 911 will be joining it. I'm try to find as much literature as I can to help me find the right one. Good luck to you!

That's easy, a Carrera, preferably an '84!

I absotively agree that "YOU NEED A 911"!!!!!

I had an 89 Cab until a month ago. It drove as well the day I sold it as the day I got it. I put 50K miles on her in 8 years and it cost me nothing. Resale value was huge. Any 911 is awesome but the 3.2 proved to me to be bullet proof.

I've never driven a g50 but I've learned how to shift the 915 in my '86 carrera. As long as you don't want to race people at lights you'll be fine... you can always get them in the twisties. If the 86s are discounted for this reason then
