To remove the chip from an 88 Carrera for examination, is it necessary to:
1. remove the front seat? 2. disconnect the battery? 3. anything else I should know about this procedure - eg. any special way to open the housing containing the chip?
1 - no; 2 - A good idea, I always disconnect the battery anytime I'm doing anything electrical; 3 -Here's a link from Steve Wong's 911chips.com site: http://911chips.com/C1INSTR.pdf
It's pretty straight forward, hope this helps...

edited: ps: I've also swapped out chips numerous time without disconnecting the battery (i.e. comparing chips w/ dyno runs), with no problems.
