Post 993 workshop manuals vs. PET cd-rom

I know the "PET" cd-rom is somewhat illegal and it's hard to get...but if there's a will there's a way...right?

My questions are:
Are workshop manuals and cd-rom different? or same?

What do they each contain?

Would you guys suggest getting both or just one? If so, which one?

Thanks for your input and info.

I am not a 911 owner(yet)but I purchased the PET CD for my 944S and it is my understanding that the CD is the factory manual just put onto a CD,exact word for word. What I did was print out paper copies of each page and now have it on CD and in paper form,I take the paper copies out to the garage to perform work.Hope this helps. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

The PET cd-rom is the Porsche parts catalog, with reference drawings to identify parts. The workshop manuals are paper manuals published by Porsche, which provides specs, diagrams, and procedures to understand and maintain the various models. The PET cd-rom is useful to source part numbers. It is useless as far as procedures to fix things, proper torque settings, advisory's when reassembling things, etc.

Hey Bill - what book(s) would you recommend for someone just getting starting with doing general maintenance and repair for an 87 Carrera. This is for the car I bought for track use and I really want to be able to do all of the basics myself - oil changes, brake changes and repairs, valve adjustments, etc.
