Talking Hi. New 911 questions. (New to me)

Hi everyone. This is my first post on Rennlist. My name is Robert Treiber. I hope to meet some nice and interesting people here. I'll tell all of you a few facts about me. I live in Northwest Alabama. My son is the one who got me interested in Porsche cars. I never thought anything about Porsche until roughly two years ago. I always thought they were overpriced. That is probably the main reason I didn't think much of Porsche. Anyways, I just bought a 1975 Guards Red 911 S. It's a great car. It has a few quirks though. Oh, and the odomoter broke at some point so I don't know the true number of miles. The only problems with the car are the transmission and the fuel consumption. The transmisson is a 5-speed manual and it has to be shifted very slowly or it makes a grinding noise. Maybe syncros? Also, I can't tell for sure since the odometer is broken, the 911 seems to only get around 10 miles per gallon. I don't think this is normal. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Also, my son drives a 1987 944. It is also a great car. My son actually referred me to this message board. He was banned for some reason. He would like to rejoin but not for $5,000.00 dollars! Anyways, thanks for reading this and I hope to hear from all of you!

Welcome Braut! Personally, I don't yet own a Porsche, but my brother has an '80's Carrera, and my dad has a brand new Boxster S. I live in the Silicon Valley area in California, so I can't afford one

Here's a shot of my dad in his Boxster S http://www.carcrafter.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51

I hope your son gets to rejoin Rennlist. This is a great source of information. If not, he can always join my board (address in my signature). We're just getting started, but the site is shaping up!

10 miles per gallon definitely seems off to me. I'd have that looked at.

Hi Ed. Thanks for the quick reply. Nice to meet you. I will tell my son about your message board. That's a nice Boxster! Talk to you soon.

Welcome,it sounds like the synchros in your tranny may be toast, but before you do anything drastic I suggest you change the tranny fluid,it may help. There are many good tranny fluids out there but most people feel that Swepco brand is excellent in the older transmissions. As far as the fuel mileage, how does the car run in general? It may need a good tune-up,plugs,wires,filters,hard to say without knowing the cars history.Good luck and you will find this website will provide very good advice.Enjoy!!

Hi Rfuerst. I will definitely change the tranny fluid before I do any rebuilding of the transmission. I just got the car so I haven't done any maintenance to it yet. I will do a tune up as well. Thanks for your help! Nice meeting all of you so far.
