Trying to Figure out how to remove the "fold top handle"
I have a 89 911 cab and I want to replace the left / right side plastic handles that are on the part of the top closest to the quarter windows when it is up. The part numbers are 911565272657 and 911565271657. Anyway, there is a plastic plug of sorts that appears to be holding the part in place. I tried (without excessive force) to pull it out and it wouldn't come. There appears to be what looks like a hole in the center of the plug. I am not sure if you are supposed to stick something in the middle and that releases the plug or what. Any thoughts?

They are actually plastic rivets. Look in the center of them and you should see an even smaller part. That part is pushed in to expand the rivets. The only way I know is to push them on through and hope you find it for reassembly. Otherwise, you need to buy new rivets to install.

Hey, I just did this a month ago. The plastic rivets are VERY cheap so you can even order a few at your local dealer. I took a very hot needle and melted the rod that expands the rivet but even then the rivet is pretty tough to get out. You should try filing the head of the rivet off and then just pushing it through. Once you get the handle off the rivet will come with it. My new handles look great.

I used a small wire cutter (craftsman) to cut off the head and then used pliers to pull out the center stem and then the rest fell out easily. I got the replacement rivets from 928 Specialists as Pelican did not have them and a dealer is a pain to get to - I ordered 10 as they are also used in my 928. Interestingly it was harder to push the center stem in and I went through a couple because it kept on bending when I pushed too hard. The trick (for me) was to use some soapy water and to align the part up better so there was less pressure against the rivet. Otherwise, that pin is really tough to get in. Hope that helps anyone else going through the process.
