Default Sourcing for a Spare

Hi all,

I recently had a blow out in my 1988 Carrera 3.2 and had to employ the 19 year old spare tire. Needless to say, thanks to dry rot, the tire disintegrated on me. Thankfully, its purpose was served and I managed to get to a tire shop just as it was about to go.

I've been in contact with the local Vredestein dealer and he says that the factory won't be making another new batch of collapsible spares for the Carrera 3.2 unless there's enough interest. I've tried other distributors and a new spare seems to be nearly impossible to find.

If this is the case, I would need to source for the spare from another source, such as a dismantler or some other store. Would you guys have any suggestions for sourcing for the spare?

If it is one of those spacesaver Vredesteins, I saw a bunch of them the last time I was at Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA (www.partsheaven.com). Not new, but new looking. I had to use my 78-vintage spare a few weeks ago, and it got me home okay.

Perhaps Oklahoma Foreign can help you.

I found 4 excellent looking ones at a large local tire distributor, when I had my shop. We inflated them all and all had bad dry rot on the sidewall. The newest one was on a red wheel, so guessing early 90's. Seeing that, I quit my search for an old spare, since I had no faith in them. I don't yet have another solution, just the grim news that 15-20 yr old tires are really no good.

I've got one sitting in my garage. You can pick it up if you want. I live in Gilroy, CA.

Managed to get myself a spare tire from a later 993 model. The offset is a bit different, but the 16 inch wheel will fit on both front and back. The 16 inch spare also fits in the trunk without any issues.

Also, I was reminded by the mechanic that those with upgraded brakes will need the 16 inch spare instead of the normal 15 inchers. My Carrera 3.2 had Boxster Calipers added and they barely cleared the 15 inch wheel. He says that those with Turbo brakes should look at the 16 inchers rather than the stock 15 inchers in the Carrera.
