...have you taken your 911? Was curious to see from such a broad forum.

TIA

Dan: 6600 rpm in 5th at Willow Springs Raceway ('81 SC coupe PCA Club Racer w/stock gears & diff). Sorry, no speedo - it was always taped over for track events.

...or, I could be a smart *** and tell you about 9500 feet (in the white '77 930 on the cover of my book) - between Mammoth Lakes and North Lake Tahoe!

My answer might be the same for both: From Los Angeles, you go above 8000 feet several times on the way to Reno, Nevada, along US-395. And on most of my track days, I'll hit 6850 in 5th with my car, which is only 133 mph with my gearing.

havent had it on the track yet so only taken it to 110 in 4th with plenty in reserve

rev cut is set at 6300. could change rotor to 6700 but no point really.

as for altitude, maybe 1000ft tops. i live on the coast & sydney is flat. maybe driving west through the "mountains" with a few rennlisters/pelicans next weekend. Even then we wont get about 4000ft

Pete caught on right away. I was really talking elevation! Interestingly, the old CIS injection system worked really well, despite being above 12,000 ft. (This engine was boosted to about 6 psi).

The ones who knew what track driving was gave me a thumbs up. Everyone else gave me a very wide berth.

Heck, I only made it to 10,974 feet on Beartooth Pass heading to Red Lodge Montana.

But I have to believe the drive over and then turn around and go back is better in the P car than maybe any other road in America. I have driven it 4x, but only 2x in the P car. This is a must do road for everyone in their Porsche.

Tips: It is "usually" open from about June thru October. Go during the week and either very early in the morning or late at night. Make sure your brakes are 100%.

There are more links out their that have better pictures of the road.

Jack,

Great photo

I wonder if you could hide a NORAD device in the tires to sweep for HP radar within a 300 mile radius

Please excuse the newbie question but does a turbo in an automobile engine aid performance at altitude in the same way that a turbo in an airplane engine does?

Yes they do.

P.S. I had my 914 up to 14,110 ft on Pikes Peak in 1976!
