Why did Porsche put differant brand struts on the same year car?? I have an '86 and when pricing the struts they want me to identify if I have Bilstein, Boge or Koni so I can get the appropriate insert. What's up with that and is one better than the other?
So I should have either Boge or Bilstein on my '86. And if I understand you correctly the Bilsteins were a factory suspension upgrade option. Well that would make sense than.
My '86 had Boge's as original equipment and I when I got that car, I replaced them with Boge Turbo's. They were a nice shock and the car rode well. I was pleased and didn't spend all that much money.
However, my recently aquired '84 had fresh Bilstein's installed (converted from Boge's that were originally on the car) just before I got it. Now, having experience with both brands of shocks (as new units), I'd highly recommend Bilsteins for both ride quality and handling capabilites. I'm big on keeping my cars bone stock, but if you can swing the Bilstein upgrade, it's well worth it. While I liked the ride quality of the Boge's when they went in my '86, I feel the Bilsteins have an even better ride quality in my '84. I used (and use) both of these cars in daily driving situations on poor roads.
This summer, my brother put an entirely new suspension on his '83 SC and did the Bilstein upgrade (car had Boge shocks/struts on it). The car handles exceptionally well without any degradation of ride quality. Very, very nice!
If anyone is interested in a couple of Bilstein inserts let me know. I have some from my 1981 SC that I removed many years ago to do some other insert work. They have zero miles on them. Just need to look through the attic for them.
I had Boges on the front and Bilstein HDs on the back. I went to Bilstein Sports all around and couldn't be happier.. er, yeah I could but it is hard to bolt on 100+hp :-)
