Default Feb 1983 R&T Roat Test: 911SC Cabrio

Thought you all (Simon especially) might enjoy this:

Does anyone have other reviews/road tests for the '83 Cab?

Sam

The only way my Miata will hit 130 is during freefall! From a high cliff!

I have an early 1.6L...not much speed in 116hp, even with a 2200 lb weight.

Actually, that top speed listed of 124 is about right, with the coupe at about 130 with lighter body and better aerodynamics. 0-60 in 7.0 flat in convertible not bad either, and the .80 on the skidpad with a cabrio on 1983-spec street tires was outstanding!!

The coupe should be able to do 135-140 (140 at redline) from that era..my 1978 european had 140mph in the owner's manual as the top speed, confirmed by me although not using a 3rd wheel but the stock speedometer - was at 225 km (140mph), may have had more but that was fast enough for me...was still pulling- take a couple more mph less speedometer error, and it would have done about 140. Tach was nearing redline before I backed off...this was in PA about 15 years ago...

Actually, just read the article...I had a targa that maybe is more streamlined than a cabriolet with the top up? Also, the power of the euro ("rest of world") motor in my car was 180hp, 195 ft/lbs torque, vs 172 hp 175 ft/lbs of torque for the 1983 US model in the artilce. Torque doesn't make a difference in top speed, but the extra 8 hp, plus harder top may have, although 16 mph is still a big difference...

Thanks for posting the article!

I guess I was referring to the MX-5 version...2.0 L w/ 170HP.

I topped out my 150 MPH speedo in my 1977 911. My tires are not as tall as stock, so I would estimate the actual speed to be somewhere under 137 MPH.

My euro '78 coupe owners manual listed 137mph top speed (approx 225km).

I believe all miatas are "mx-5s"... much like "carerras" and "sc's" are 911's

I remember reading that road test when the magazine first came out and several times since over the years.

So.. since many seem obsessed with "resale value" when will these cars be worth $36K again (or is that $50K with inflation)

My manual listed 225 KM as top speed too....225KM x 0.62= 139.5 MPH (so we'll round to 140 )

W/R/T top speed, I have several '80s mags with their "top speed showdowns" in my collection, and the Carrera was barely able to break 140 in most of those tests, even with the stronger motor and taller gearing of the Carrera over the SC.
