Hi All,

I have .jpg's of the magazine article and will post them on this thread this evening. That might save some emailing of larger files.

It's a good read and a well written article.

I can safely say during our DFW drive to the race track Saturday that my 911 will bump the rev limiter in each gear. I was very pleased.
Ah, I just don’t buy that. There’s no way you could get a Carrera 3.2 to 60 in 5.3 seconds unless it was downhill with a brisk wind up the backside. That said, I did spank a an Integra Type-R a few days ago. But then – it might have just had the bodykit….

I think we forget these cars are quick sometimes, even by modern standards. What I mean by that is a mate got in the car the other day and said, “The acceleration in this thing is just stupid” (in a good/suprised way). I find the acceleration “brisk” in my car by not eye-widening. I want a car eventually that’s so fast it makes people panic.

You should ride in my srt8 it gets weird.

I dont buy 5.3 but then again mine isnt new. An im not a pro driver. the 0-60 time in a 5 speed is very subjective.

Fred,

That sounds great. I'll fire them (the 4-5 pages of the C&D '84 Carrera review) off this evening.

Thanks,

Jay

A few things I have to add:
1. I don't buy 5.3 seconds for an 84 911 either- My guess is the beat the crap out of the car, got lucky with sticky tires and a timing error....I have a 93 which is noticably quicker than my 87 was (93 is cab, 87 was targa- body shouldn't make much difference in comparing 0-60 since both are a little heavier than the coupe), and the typical times for the 964 are the mid-5's in the magazines. There's no way a 200hp '84 is in the low 5's (stock anyway) in my opinion- there's no way my 87 was as fast as my 93 is.

That said, I love reading period road tests on cars.

2. Someone mentioned that the 84 was the fastest car one of the magazines tested that year and said the competition must have been sleeping....well, the competition was just getting going because the 1970's mandated smog equipment slowed cars down so much- it wasn't so much their fault as them taking time to fund and develop the technology that gave us higher volume sports cars that started getting quick again (mid 80's corvette, Buick GN, 300ZX turbo, IROC and mustangs, etc).

The late 60s, 70's and 80's is the era which porsche got the reputation for being "fast cars" as opposed to just sports cars- prior to that I don't think any road car from porsche- excluding the 4-cam carrera maybe- was thought of as a fast car.

In 1978 the SC did 0-60 in the mid 6's, the turbo in the mid 5's, compared to a motor trend test of an automatic corvette which was 9 seconds 0-60. There was nothing as fast as porsches besides either Ferrari's (even the 308's were slower though), or what were by then used old muscle cars that were thirsty cars in an era of high gas prices and gas shortages.

3. Lastly, someone made the comment they hit the rev limiter in all 5- gears- the car should be able to do that since top speed is hit at redline so your car is running great! I hit top in my old '78 out in PA when I had it in the early 90's- I didn't hit the rev limiter, but that needle was just about to the red...140 mph! Because of the power curve, the car gets that extra umph to the maximum speed relatively quickly vs. some cars that are not near their power peak at maximum due to gearing...those cars seem to take forever to eek that last few mph to top speed out...especially when making sure there is no other traffic or cops

Here's a period test on the 1985 corvette- mentions some specs on the 911 0-60 6.2 sec, 1/4 mile 14.6 sec. I remember knowing all this stuff by heart back in the day...today I don't know all the numbers or care enough...I'm stuck in the 1980s-1990s car wise, due to my age I guess

Nevermind,

I looked up on Nada

85 Vette $5,950/$11,250/$14,900

85 Carrera $16,400/$18,600/$25,200

Looks like the Vette depreciated a lot more percentage wise then the Carrera.
