Default Tach Damping

my Tach has an intersting annomoly I thought I would "bounce" off you guys. The tach is solid excpet for when I downshift from 5th to 3rd and punch it to pass someone. The tach starts bouncing around like crazy from 4-7 thousand RPM until it settles down and I can never tell when to switch to 4th as the tach is everywhere and I am worried about over revving the engine.
Of course it is the momentary change in RPm that causes the bounce. Is there anything that can be done to give the Tach better damping, or is my Tach not working as it should ?

seems to be a very common issue...i've seen this in a number of p-cars to varying degrees.

mine bounces about 1000rpm momentarily when you rev on a downchange from 3rd to 2nd.

no idea how to fix though

yep mine does the same in that shift also. As my shift from 5th to 3rd and punching it is more aggresive it really bounces a lot . Kind of unnearving really.

Ice: I've never seen that symptom, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, only that many owners who see it happen just ignore it. You probably should give No. Hollywood Speedo (818) 761-5136 a call, or write them at 6111 Lankershim Blvd., No. Hollywood, CA 91606. If anyone out there knows if a problem exists and how to fix it they will.
Cheers, Pete

Thanks Pete i think I will look them up and see if they have a wb site. I have heard of these guys before and have a great rep. I may be in LA next year at some point so may be worth checking out.

If this is annoying you, it requires attention. As Pete suggests, North Hollywood Speedo can fix it. It requires replacing missing silicon somewhere in the mechanism. Jim Taylor

Iceman,

Just wondering, could it be the alternator?

naw, this is not the typical tach bouncing you get when the alternator goes, this is a mechanical issue more than anything. makes sense that some sliicone grease would dampen the needle enough that ot wouldn't do this. Besides my trusty alternator says everything is fine ...

PS how is the rebuild coming ?

Mine does that as well - but I have not paid attention to which gears when downshifting. I just have avoided down shifting. I plan to have it checked out when I pull all my gauges to put in new bulbs and to clean the glass as a couple are fogged.

One easy thing to check is it could be a bad ground from your engine to the chassis. One time after I rebuilt the motor in my car I forgot to tighten down the ground strap that goes from the transmission to the chassis. Even though the car would start ok, when I was on and off the gas hard the tach would go crazy (like you describe). So that should be easy to check and make sure all your ground connections are good.

One thing I've learned over the years...always try the easiest stuff first!
