1976' 911 Targa Slantnose? Real or Not?
Ok I don’t normally post to the 911 forum – but just what the heck am I looking at hear?
More Pictures = 1976' 911 Targa Slantnose
The car belongs to a neighbor friend of mine who inherited it from a family member who passed away recently. The overall condition isn't that great but it all seems to be there.
It’s a 76 Targa (Made 9/75) but I’m confused about a couple of things. First of all I didn’t think that the slant nose came out until much later but I’ve found a couple of references on the web to a kit being available and am wondering if that isn’t what I am looking at because my friend said that he seems to recall it being a kit.
I was also informed that the engine was replaced about a year or so back with a 3.0L from an early 80’s 911 but that’s all second (third) hand information. Looking at the engine compartment it looks like there’s a disconnected A/C compressor, but I don’t see the controls on the dash.
The VIN# is 9116210456. Anybody know anyway to confirm what I am looking at?
Thoughts?

99.99999% sure its a kit. i believe slant nose cars didnt come out til mid 80's. iirc, they didnt make em in targas either.. or they may have, just very few

Looks like an aftermarket kit. The front airdam appears to be fiberglass as it has a large crack in the lower left front. Check to see if the flares are steel or fiberglass. A magnet will be the key here as factory was steel. I think the boxed rockers are aftermarket as is the rear vents. Also, the seats appear to be those from a Carrera 3.2 or later.

yeah, good eye on the crack in the air dam near the fog lights. also look at the fit of the headlights.. the gaps, that is, specifically on the drivers side.

The option was available for the Targa & Cabro also.

Ok so it seems pretty obvious that this is an kit. I guess the next bit of information I need to get for my neighbor is “what’s it worth?”
I know a gentlemen in the San Diego MG Club that was selling an 80 something Slant nosed Waletail awhile back – assuming it was the real deal – he was asking about $6500-7500 for it. So if I had to guess I’d say that if it was in pristine condition it would sell for about two or three less than the real McCoy. All that coupled with the high miles (~264,000mi) I'd make a rough guess at between $3000 to $4000 tops if it was my money.
The good news is that it looks to be pretty much cancer (rust) free. However as you can tell by the photos its body isn’t in the best of shape – the old gal who owned it managed to damage every corner before she passed away. While it seems to run fine and passed the required smog test - it was the recipient of a power plant swap not too long ago. The neighbor insists the motor is either an 83 or an 84’ vintage.
If it was mine I’d research what it’d cost to either replace or fix the damaged finders and possibly revert it back to the normal front end. Minus the outlandish slant nose & fold away headlights, but keep the flared finders and wider rubber.
Personally I’m not a body & finder man and would much rather have a strait body with horrible mechanicals than the other way around.

We think it's a 3.0L engine but I can't tell by looking at it.

But like I said the car belongs to a good neighbor friend of mine who inherited it from a relative who recently passed away. I’m just trying to help him figure out what he’s got and what his options are. \
Personally the wife has already put me on notice that I’d better not bring home anymore orphans or I’ll be looking for a new place to stay. So I couldn't take it even if my friend gave it to me.

unfortunately, unless he finds the right buyer, the car is a tough sell, its one of the most undesireable years, thats been butchered with a body kit, the tire/wheel doesn't even fill the wheel well. And being in SoCal, I think 76 still needs to be smogged, I dont remember if its 76 AND earlier, or Pre 76
It wouldn't even make a candidate for a race car since its a targa so that option is out too
Poor car is another victim of 80's Porsche fasion crime
He will have to sell it cheap or part it out would be my guess, The motor looks like an SC motor, judging by the miles, and car, he could make more breaking it for parts, SC motor running and testing good is worth $4K or there abouts, top for the targa is around $1500, trans, wheels, sad way to go. or if it has high sentimental value, keep it

Factory slantnoses were officially designated with the M505 factory option...and were made in coupes, targas, and cabriolets from 1987-1989. There were some made ealier at the Porsche Dreamworks...but they didn't carry any sort of factory designation.

It definitely looks like an SC motor. Metal fuel lines so I think that puts it at '80 or later. I think just the 78 and 79 had the plastic fuel lines... looks like it has been neglected somewhat , at least on the outside. The engine should be fairly bulletproof so may be worth having to drive around , but it is what it is ..... I just hate to see any working car parted out ....
