Default Balky Gear Shifts

My '88 Targa has been difficult to shift recently from a cold start. At times it takes 8-9 attempts to go into reverse. I usually park it in 1st, then go to neutral to start, then to reverse. It's been "stuck in neutral" lately until I finally find 1st then run on through to reverse. Could this be due to temperature changes? Could it be low transmission oil?

Please help!! Thanks!!

or old transmission oil. Changing the oil would probably help.

Carnick:

How long has it been since the clutch hydraulic fluid was changed?

Is the slave cylinder original?

Do you have a good synthetic oil in the transmission?

I don't have an air cooled Porsche (yet), but on many other vehicles that balked at going into reverse, it helped to push in the clutch, move the gearshift to 3rd (without lifting off the clutch), move the gearshift to reverse, and THEN realse the clutch. I'm not sure why, but it's helped on everything from CJs to MGs...

It gets the syncos and all the gears spinning at same speed!

Default Thanks -

Thanks everyone and all! Looks like I have some work to do this weekend. I had planned an engine oil change - now I'll add the transmission changes.

See ya!

When you put it in 3rd with the clutch pushed in, it stops the input shaft so you can get it in reverse, BMW's VW's and Porsche people use this trick to get it into first at a stop sign when the syncros start to go south.
