Cool 1987 Carrera Coupe - Market Value?

After owning a 1970T and a 1977 Carrera 3.0 in the past, I've been Porscheless for the last 3 years (the third kid will do that to the best of us).

I'm ready to take the plunge again on a 1987 Carrera Coupe I just checked out yesterday. 61K documented miles, 3 owner car, all records, White over blue, factory spoilers, perfect body and paint (no wrecks), color matched 16" Fuchs with good rubber. All original. Has original clutch which seems to be in good shape - release bearing recall had been performed at 35K and clutch was left alone.

Interior is beautiful, no rips/cracks, partial leather with very little wear on drivers seat. Bottom of the case is a little wet, but after a 20 minute test drive and extensive idling therafter, no drips under the car (oil return tubes were replaced 10K miles ago).

Only problems I saw were the hood shocks need replacement front and back, the A/C needs a charge and the idle was high at 1300rpm. The car only received 2K miles of use in the last 18 months but has been garaged and covered the last 10 years when not used. I'm having a thorough pre-purchase inspection done by Automotion (car is in the D.C. area).

The prices for these cars are all over the map, and I'm blown away by some people that are actually asking in the high $20K range, while some seem available in the mid to high teens. I'd appreciate feedback on what this car's value is.

Thanks,

Pete

I bought my '86 coupe (83K,all records)in what seems similiar condition to yours fof $18K last fall. This seemed to be about market price.

Records show that the clutch ($1300) and the alternator ($ 600) had been replaced in the last 10k miles. These are recognized problesm/expected repairs for that mileage range. I'd deduct those from the price if no record of being fixed.

The G50 transmission that replaced the 915 in '87 commands extra money ($2-4K?) although you get differing opinions on this board on whether it is actually better. I think the G50 is percieved as more durable.

Based on these two factors I think your looking at the high teens as a fair price.

Pete:

In the August 2001 issue of Excellence, Bruce Anderson gives the following values for an '87 coupe.

Poor: $17,534
Good: $19,936
Excellent: $26,688

I've always noticed that the G-50 trans cars bring more than the '84-'86 cars.

When the economy was good a few years back, G-50 Carrera's really were bringing top dollar. Mid to upper $20k asking prices were quite common. I would suspect that with this slowing economy, prices would have moderated a bit. But, these late 3.2's really are popular which might hold prices up.

Good Luck,
Jay

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of paying around $19K if the car gets a clean inspection and if the A/C is intact and needs charging only. The car is truly in excellent condition, I can't find a blemish on the paint, the seats are clean, nice 16 inch Fuchs with White centers. I really want a G50 car (ever since I drove a 1989 Carrera), to me they shift much better, but that's probably because all the 915 tranny cars I've driven have had more miles and the everpresent weakened 2nd gear synchro.

They are not making any more late model 3.2s, so when you find a nice one "at market"... It sounds as though this will be a "keeper" for you, therefore condition & desirability is more important than extracting the last $ out of the deal. $19K for the car as described, passing PPI, is a very good deal, IMO. In Dec. of '00 my very similar Carrera cost me a bit more, & I was (and remain) pleased. Enjoy!

I agree with Kevin. If the car is as you've described, you can consider yourself lucky to get it at $19k, or even at $20k.

I sold an '88 911 (white/blue interior/white center Fuch) in excellent condition almost 4 years ago for $25k. I'm surprized to still see nice ones advertized in the high 20s. Of course, advertized price and selling price may vary by a few thousand. Still, the '87 to '89 911s seem to be holding their value well and are apparently in high demand.

This sounds like a very nice one. One word of advice (and you'll love this one): if this one's as nice as it sounds, don't let a thousand or so stand in the way of buying it. Regrets of not buying one you really wanted are more haunting than regrets of buying one you later wish you hadn't.

My '87 has some minor body issues and will be repainted in the near future. But I got it last July for $17k with 72.5k miles on it. The engine is very strong, leakdown numbers were good and she's a real pleasure to drive - and learn from. I saw a concourse black '87 on Sat. and the owner said my engine (similar mileage) sounded a lot better than his. I'd love to have his car's body on my engine and chasis. There's a midnight blue '88 in this area now for $15,900, albeit with a much-needed top end job in its immediate future. So their prices are all over the map. If you get one, regardless of condition, have $2k handy for minor repairs and/or surprises.

Hi,
I just bought an '88 911 baltic blue, tan interior, tail, 49k and VERY clean, excellent paint and original. I had looked at 3 or 4 previously but I knew this was the one. I paid 25k, replaced the return tubes & have been smiling ever since. It needs nothing except to hit the road ! Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice guys. I closed the deal for $21K and the pre-purchase by Automotion's top Porsche mechanic (Mark) is on for tomorrow. Hope it turns out as expected and that I will be driving the it home tomorrow night!

JG,

$21K is still a good deal for the car you described. Have a lot of fun. Join the PCA.

$21K for that car, if it is that good of condition, is a great price. I would think the only thing hurting or lowering the cars value would be the color scheme. White over Blue doesn't hold up in value as well as the traditional Red/Black. Enjoy the new 911.
