Hi there,
I have a 71 911E. The ignition light doesn't go out until over 1100/1200 rpm and it seems quite high. Yet I don't appear to have any problems with the batteries going flat.
Could this be due to a faulty voltage regulator? Or is it common for 911's of that period?
Thanks in advance
Adam

well I f you mean gen light then I would suspect the alternator/ regulator. put a meter across the battery while runing and see what you read. if it is lesss than about 13.5 volts something is wrong. if you increase the rpms the voltage will go up turning out the light. Check your alternator belt for slippage. report back your findings and we will go from there. Definitely sounds like a alternator though. There are specific voltages you are looking for at idle and higher rpms but leets start with the basic check.

Ice is right, you should check your voltage and belt tension, but the alternators on those early cars do not put out much at low rpm. As long as your voltage is good above 2k rpm or so I would not worry about it.

Adam,
It's quite normal ... most early cars do this. My 71T's alternator/pressure light does not turn off until the RPM has reach 2K+RPM. After this start-up cycle the light should stay off.

I re-read my original reply and found it to be a bit ambiguous ...
So, let me try again .... in the early cars, the Alternator and Oil Pressure senders are connected to the same warning light. And during normal operations, the Alt/Oil Pressure light will stay on until pressure is build up which is usually between 1500 to 2000 RPM. As long as the light goes off and stay off you should be alright.
