Has anyone been able to remove the fastening catch from the cab roof assembly? Any info about how to remove it (I'm trying to get the fastener out from a cab, but I assume that its the same set up for the targa as well?
I cracked the integrated turning mechanism and can't lock down the top to the front of the windshield frame. I was able to remove the 2 super - torx fasteners, but can't slide, wedge, spoon or pry the fastener out. REALLY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!
Hmm, while I'm asking, does anyone have an old targa/cab top laying around that they might scavenger the fastening mechanism out of? I don't think that even if I get the fastener out that I'll be able to open it up and fix it.
Thanks
Adam

Adam, I had the same problem with my targa, all though the latch was easy to get out. For years I used a small pair of needle nose plyers to lock/unlock the top. Recently I posted the question you had and wondered where I could buy them. There is a guy in Pano who does nothing but targa top restoration. His name escapes me but he is back east. He was offering the latches for about $75 I think. I got lucky and located an old top on this site.

Hi,
I had the same problem on my 72 Targa top. After I priced the latch mechanism through Proformance Products at 264.00 each I decided to put my engineering hat on and come up with a solution. I found that the OD of the latch part where the release lever goes was ever so slightly larger than the ID of 1/2 inch copper pipe. So I tried to slip a piece of the copper pipe over the latch part that was cracked. Keep in mind that I first pinched the crack part back together as much as I could. I found that I had to use a hammer to tap it in place which made for a very snug fit and I noticed that it ever closed up the crack. I then cut the copper piece flush and filed it down abit for appearence sake. They now work perfectly and the release lever fits in snugly. Oh, I also had to file the nibs on the release lever a little because they do stick out. Hope this helps and if you try it and need any additional info feel free to contact me.

Thanks Tom - I too am looking for the alternative to the three bills that a replacement part would cost. But, I can't even get to the point of using your info yet b/c I can't get the *** **** part out of the Cab top <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
Three hours, four guys (two of whom are professional mechanic) a whole lot of cursing and head scratching, a new "super torx" socket set and the mechanism is still sitting in the top laughing at us.
Well, the beast will have to stay in the garage while its overcast until the weekend when I can really have at it again -
Thanks for the insight and when I seperate fastener from top, I might have to pick your engineering hat further.
