Cheapest insurance co. for an '89 Carrera?!!
I'm paying way too much for my '89 Carrera through State Farm, and was wondering of any companies that might specialize in possibly 5k a year programs/insurance. I've tried to get in touch with a few of them out there, but most of them are selling some type of 'classic car' insurance, which means your car has to be at least 20 years old etc....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just purchased a 1990 C2 Coupe this past February. After temporary insurance with my present carrier, they finally had a firm quote which was sky high!! About $1650/yr.
Looked at Grundy and Leland West, but they are too restrictive. No errands! Mileage limits! Tried a couple of independent agents to no avail. Finally, went to Geico!! Annual premium for 100/300 and $500 deductible is $780/yr, no accidents or points.Hope this can save you a few bucks!!

I use State Farm and am quite happy. Of course there are several variables with rates, but they do offer a 'limited' use plan for 2nd/3rd cars. I think the mileage limit is 7500k miles/year. My SC is only about $600/yr and I am 26 in MD.
Also, I made sure the replacement value wasnt the standard book value. My agent said book value is used for a loss unless photos and receipts can show an increase in value. Just another excuse to take more pictures of the car! Saving a few bucks a year doesnt make sense if you get stuck in case of a loss.
Good Luck

I switched to Leyland West for the same reasons and agree they have pretty severe restrictions but for the most part Im OK with them. My biggest gripe is that they do not cover any driver's Ed events and Im told they are "looking into it" in terms of covering DE.
In my search I spoke to an ?independent? agent in TX who happened to be a sports car enthusiast - you could do a search on Google, etc and see what you find- most but not all "collector car" insurance carriers require the cars be 20+ years old.
Please let us know if you find another option.
TIA,
Dan

Lush Daddy,
Farm Bureau was the cheapest insurance company i could find. State Farm was too high for me.
The payment was $429 ever 6 months. The price i stated above would have been about 100 bucks less but i have rec. a few speeding tickets.
If you are atleast 25 years old you should be able to get a good rate unless you have had a bad driving record.

I used All State, paying $2100 a year for 4 cars
87 BMW 325i Liability & Uninsure motorist only
96 Toyata 4runner limited : Full coverage
88 BMW 635CSi : Full coverage
87 Porsche Turbo Look Cab Full coverage
$50K /$125K /$250K limit pay-out by All State for Full coverage, I think ??
This rate base on 2 drivers with excellent driving record and also I have my home fire insurance with All State.
AM I paying to much ??

I currrently use Leland West, the underwriter is American Modern Home out of Cincinnati. My 944S2 Cab is $357/yr. 100/300,000; 5000 miles; garaged. Replacement value of $15000. I just got off the phone with them about the rates on a 1988 930S Cab with a replacement value of $50000. The rate was $957/yr at $500 dedictable and $727/yr with $1000 deductable. I think I will give Gieco a call. My regular car insurance company, Allstate wanted $957/6 mnths. WIth 100/300,000, $100 deductable, 0 deductable on Comprehensive. The turbo and high replacement value really kick the rate up. I ahve homeowners and two Explorers with them right now. I am 44, my wife 38 and we each got a ticket in the last three years. Allstate just doesn't care to insure higher risk (expensive body parts) cars. They would insure my Harley when I had it either. Good luck.

I can't comment on what you pay since I live in Canada and there appears to be a difference in the cost of insurance. I pay $1150CAN ($740USD) per year. The car is listed as "recreational" with no restrictions. It is also a "replacement value" policy which requires an biannual appraisal but entitles me to claim the loss in resale value as well as repairs. I would like to say that I never buy the "cheapest" of anything unless the best just happens to be the cheapest (almost never). I would never consider buying the cheapest insurance that I can find since insurance works like everything else, that is, Pay now or Pay later. I recommend shopping insurance through a broker who agrees to be your contact in the event of a claim. This is likely to result in better service and settlement. Just my $.02

Keep in mind that insurance costs (premiums) have a lot of variables. When comparing one persons rates to another, compare apples to apples.
Here are some of my variables:
I have State Farm (and am happy with them). I'm a 30-yr old male (age/gender) and live in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN (location). I have all my vehicles (3) insured though State Farm, as well as my homeowner's policy (multi-car/multi line discount). I also have a clean driving record (no tickets or accidents). This gives me an accident free discount. My deductable is $250.00 with $20K pers./$250K comp./$250K coll. coverage with mileage restriction of 7.5K annually. I also have emergency roadside coverage. The semi-annual premium on my '82 SC is ~$353.00 ($700+ annually).
Keep all these variables in mind when shopping for the correct coverage for yourself. Manipulating any one or more of these factors can potentially have a significant impact on the premium you pay. Another factor to consider when shopping rates is the particular companies ability to pay/assist you when needed.
One last comment, I avoid Geico on principal alone!!! In the past, Geico has funded the Colorado Highway Patrol/State Police for the purchase of laser radar guns. Talk about a conflict of interest!!! Second, they are known for giving a descent initial rate but then after even one ticket, jacking your rates through the roof.

I agree on the variables. I am 40 yrs. old, no tickets, male, wife w/3 kids, I also insure 2 other personal vehicles as well as a number of my company fleet vehicles. I let them know (in no uncertain terms) that in the event of a claim, I will NOT engage in any disputes with thier appraisers. The "buck" stops at my sales broker, period. It is well worth the extra hundred dollars.
