Post Carrera Strut failure

I finished putting on front and rear Weltmeister 22mm sway bars and a Weltmeister strut brace on my 84 Targa (thanks for all the help from a earlier post). All of it went pretty uneventful. Test drove the car for about ten miles and brought it back and put it up on jackstands to install a set of ss brake hose's. To my surprise the left front strut was completely loose. After closer inspection I found the strut to be sheared off where it meets the wider part of the strut housing ( about 3/4" below the threads). These are Bilsteins struts OE 49,000 miles and as far as I could tell have never been apart. I touque the strut nut to 60 foot pounds as per the instructions with the camber strut brace. The thought of a strut failing at a DE event sends shivers up my spine. I guess am lucky. Anybody else have this or heard of this problem.

Question

It may have to do with stress from the strut brace if it is the kind that bolts on to the top of the struts. Some people make up a brace that welds on to the shock towers. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />
