Default '76 911S fuel pump problems?

The car starts and idles fine, give it some gas and it skips and if the accelerator is held down it will back fire. Gas tank is clean and no contaminents to be found. I noticed that when I turn the key that I don't here that noticable hum anymore, and thats when it started "acting up". Am I right to assume the fuel pump is to blame. And is it located under the car by the fuel tank? Thanks in advance.

Backfire - through the intake, or exhaust?

Try checking your points - only LV across them and any small amount of contamination will cause this backfire effect. Just wipe the contacts with a piece of abrasive. Experienced this problem a couple of years ago but fortunately had someone in the trade give me the information. Worth a try before delving into spending bucks.

Exhaust backfire usually indicates a rich mixture, or an electrical problem that leads to unburned fuel detonating in the exhaust. pjc is on the right track - check to be sure that your points are not contaminated. They can also be closed up - check to be sure that the dwell angle (38 +/- 3 degrees) is in spec.
