Is 911 oil thermostat necessary?
I have a 76' 911 that I am going to use strictly for the track and autocross. I am intalling a front mount oil cooler and want to replace the lines with braided hoses. Does anyone know of any reason that I can't get rid of the thermostat and run the hoses directly from the cooler to the engine and tank? I live in Arizona, so it dosen't get all that cold.

The thermostat will open when the oil has heated up to 170 or 180 F, until the oil gets to this temp it is to thick and will pop the front mount cooler.
Hope this helps

That thermostat is also a pressure relief valve and helps ensure that the engine is not starved of oil at peak demands.
If a person is absolutely, positively religious about warming the engine below 2000 RPM, until the oil temps reaches 170 deg, then you can remove the thermostat. If not, it does no harm unless it sticks partially or completely closed.
