Default 1974 911 carrera targa question?

Hi, all

I'm new to porsche, I've been looking to buy a porsche for along time. Someone is selling me a 1974 911carrera targa for $5000. the car looks in fair condition. He did tell me it had a oil leak.
I' am looking for a porsche that i could work on it with time. Do some engine work to it, etc. Do you think it's a good idea to get a 1974 targa 911 carrera or another model and year. I really dont like the 944, 928.
I've been trying to research more, is it hard to work on a 1974 2.7 engine (911 carrera targa) or get parts for it.
here is a link to some pics.

Hello Jrod,

First off, it's not a Carrera, it's a 911S.

I had one just like this but in right hand drive. Easy for most parts and not too hard to work on.
Have a PPI done to ensure the head studs haven't pulled out of the case.
Check for rust in the usual places.
I really loved mine.
Good luck
Frank

Tell us where you live.

And buy an SC.

Good luck!

Paul.

You should agree to the sale only on the condition that it gets a re-puechase inspection first from a Porsche shop of your choosing. If not, you could easily be looking at a $7-8,000 rebuild of the motor, or a $2,000 rebuild of the transaxle, or something else. With a car as old as that, you have to protect yourself with a pre-purchase inspection. If it checks out at that point, then go for it. But do not agree to the sale without one.
