Default 82 exchangers for 78sc

I will be getting some 82 exchangers for my 78sc and from what I have seen they are different . I think the 82s use a thin flange and the 78 is the thicker flange. I have heard of spacers for this. Does anyone know if I am correct in this and where i could get the spacers if that is what I need ?

Thanks.

It's the other way around - 82 used thick flange.

The idea of using spacers to get the thin flange HEs to work on a car that needs thick flange is a real hack, would not recommend it.

Are you installing stock heat exchangers? If so they are readily available used, cheap.

no - as I said above they won't fit right. Shimming them is a hack and will screw up your muffler attachment locations. You should buy some from a 78 or 79 SC.

Or better yet, upgrade to an early style exhaust (i.e, SSIs), unless smog restrictions keep you from eliminating the catalytic converter.

If you REALLY want the original style heat exchangers, post a "want to buy" ad over at the Pelican site under " Porsche 911 Used Parts For Sale & Wanted". Make sure to indicate 78-79 SC only. You will have plenty of people respond who would be happy to sell you their old heat exchangers cheap . They have all upgraded to SSIs or headers.

For reference - on US 911SCs, 78-79 = thin flange, 80-83 = thick flange.

Cheers,

Jeff

Thanks jeff

II just thought if it were the flanges where it ataches to the head I could replace the studs with longer ones and be fine. Oh well.

You're welcome!

If you were to do this and started replacing all the studs with longer ones, after about the second one you'd be wishing you had the correct part
